TUI - TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF ILMENAU MODERNIZATION, RENOVATION AND EXTENSION OF FARADAY BUILDING

The Faraday Building - with laboratories, teaching and administrative rooms of the Institute of Physics and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences - is the second oldest building of the Technical University of Ilmenau. Built in 1926, another building was built as an extension in the second phase in 1936/37.

The modernization of the listed building included the renovation of the interior of the laboratory and office spaces, and the electrical systems, heating and water systems were completely overhauled. The building is listed and protected. The laboratories to be renovated are physical, optical, chemical and biological and include laser devices, solar technology equipment, X-ray machines and individual physical-chemical workstations. Some are similar to clean rooms with different requirements for climate, heat, light, sound insulation and freedom from vibration. The energy-saving measures were related to the room function. For example, optical laboratories were positioned in the shaded area of the stairwell in order to improve the climatic conditions.

The extension, a two-storey new building for a 200-seat lecture hall, was integrated into the cityscape, the interior and exterior color scheme was carried out with heritage conservation in mind and in coordination with the monument protection authorities. The thermally insulated curtain system for the extension not only has an energetic function: the bottle-green, shiny ESG panes reflect the old building, so that it looks like an extension of the existing building.

The historical painting on the east side of the building was preserved. The existing plastered facade of the listed building was sustainably and energetically improved with an organic plaster system. We also implemented the fire protection planning. The measures took place while the laboratory was in operation.
